10 tips for dropping weight in time for summer 2023

Summer 2023 is just around the corner, and if you’re not entirely happy with your body, the season of shorts, summer dresses, and bathing suits can be a significant source of stress. Luckily, there’s still some time to tackle your problems head-on and feel like the best version of yourself throughout the summer months and beyond.

1. Move your body 

It might seem daunting at first, but you can start small! Commit to 15-30 minutes of movement daily, whether it’s walking, yoga, or a light jog.  

With time, you might notice that your usual 15 minutes don’t seem like enough anymore – that’s how you know it’s time to add something else to the routine. When you’re up to it, increase the amount of cardio, challenge yourself with some high-intensity workouts, or work on tone with some strength exercises.

2. Level up your fitness game with a workout plan 

If your usual workout regime has gotten stale and you feel like it’s time for a fresh approach, following a fitness plan geared towards your specific goals could make a world of difference.

3. Don’t forget about rest

Did you know that sleep and weight loss are intrinsically connected? Not only do we burn a small amount of fat during sleep, but too little sleep can also slow down our metabolism, contributing to weight gain. Don’t underestimate the power of good quality sleep, and make sure you get upwards of 7 hours per night. 

4. Don’t skip breakfast

You might be inclined to skip meals as it gets closer to summer, starting with breakfast. This could be counterproductive, as breakfast helps your body feel nourished and satisfied, making it less likely you’ll overeat the rest of the day. 

In fact, three main meals and two smaller snacks can help you space out your calorie intake and speed up your metabolism. So, don’t skip breakfast, or any other meal for that matter – instead, make sure your meals are as healthy as possible and provide the body with the sustenance it needs. 

5. Balanced meals

Cut out fatty, sugary, overly salty, processed food and focus on fresh and natural ingredients instead, with lots of seasonal fruits and veggies. Don’t forget about fibre – a healthy metabolism is critical for weight loss. Make simple swaps, like replacing white rice with brown, regular pasta for whole wheat, etc.  

6. Mindful eating

However, a healthy diet involves not just thinking about what we eat but also how we eat. Eat mindfully and slowly, savouring whatever is on the plate in front of you. Slowing down means you’ll be able to recognise when you feel full and avoid overeating. To minimise food waste, you can always heat up the leftovers later. 

7. Stay hydrated

Drinking water can help us feel less hungry, boost our metabolism, and even burn more calories! 

Sugary drinks are high in calories, so replacing them with water can drastically decrease calorie intake. Drinking water immediately before meals may also drastically reduce appetite. 

8. Treat yourself – in moderation

Being too hard on yourself can make sticking to healthy habits even harder! Life’s all about balance, and while it’s important to make healthy choices most of the time, it’s also okay to indulge our cravings occasionally. So, if you have a fun event coming up, don’t worry about counting calories too much.  


9. Self-care

We know you’re busy. Daily life, exercising, meal planning… It’s a lot. Don’t forget to pencil in some “me” time. Maybe a quiet coffee break to yourself during the workday, away from your phone. Reflect on what you’ve already achieved and what you want to accomplish in the future. Meditation, breathing exercises, journaling, or any other activity that you find relaxing – whatever works for you!
