I was a chubby kid who grew up into a chubby adult. I never had physical hobbies or engaged in any sports, and I had terrible eating habits. I was too lazy to cook and didn’t even realise how important a healthy diet was. 

Most evenings, I would endlessly scroll through my social media feeds, admiring all the successful and beautiful women I saw – actresses, models, women with perfect bodies and skin, and even perfect careers. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you I felt ugly, fat, miserable. I wanted a change but didn’t know where to start. 

The traffic jam that set it all in motion...

One day, coming home from another horrible day at a job I hated, I ended up stuck in a really bad traffic jam. I tried looking for some fun music on the radio to pass the time, but eventually, I settled on a podcast instead.  

I was immediately intrigued when I heard the host talk about mindset, motivation, and how to get what you want. It got me thinking about what I ACTUALLY wanted. To feel better about myself, lose weight, feel confident, happier, and find a career path I would enjoy more... Like all the successful women I was following on the internet. But HOW? That kind of life always seemed so out of reach.  

The motto behind it all

While processing this, the podcast host said something that would change my life: Action creates action! It doesn’t matter what your goal is; get moving and work towards your dream. Every small movement will lead to other movements, and this can be a big source of motivation to keep going!” 

And you know what? That was precisely what I needed to hear. It might seem small or insignificant, but it was a game-changer for me. When I got home after spending a few frustrating hours stuck in traffic, I decided to test this approach. Instead of lying on the sofa and watching TV, I looked for tips on confidence and weight loss online.  

I know this seems like a ridiculously small thing, but believe it or not, it worked! I found a lot of interesting information, articles, and motivational posts. Eventually, this led me to take that next step. And then the next one, and the next one – towards the change I so desperately needed. 

What have I learned on my journey?

Did you know you don’t need to starve yourself, eat exclusively salads, or run 10 km daily to lose weight? It can be a lot easier than that. How? Well, with BALANCE and CONSISTENCY.   

What do I mean when I say “BALANCE?” Well, it’s pretty simple: too much of anything is bad.   

I always thought that to get my dream body, I’d have to give up everything I enjoy. Chinese food, hamburgers, chocolate, wine...  

But what if I told you that you can eat and drink what you want and still lose weight and feel better about yourself? As I said, it’s all about balancing and creating eating habits that you can consistently follow long-term.  

Forget about following one rigorous fad diet after another – the pineapple diet, coffee diet, keto diet, and who knows what kind of other diets are out there. They may bring short-term results, but you’ll likely gain all the weight back and then some. The dreaded yo-yo effect is the downfall of most slimming attempts…  

So, what’s the alternative?

Start slowly, with small actions. Eat just 1 piece of bread for breakfast instead of 2, and add some extra fruit to fill you up. Switch some of the potatoes on your plate for other veggies for lunch. Skip the glass of wine you’d typically have for dinner and have a cup of herbal tea instead. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or, even better, get off the bus one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way.  

I can guarantee that when you start with these small actions, you’ll be able to see and feel the difference. This can be a source of motivation to keep going and even to take it up a notch. It couldn’t be any simpler!  

I tried this approach too, and guess what? I found myself eating better and better every day. I discovered new recipes and delicious food I didn’t even know existed. I could still enjoy pizza, beer, and chocolate in moderation without feeling guilty. I was balancing food that was good for me and my “guilty pleasures”.
